Judge Sarah Hall's Comments on 'The Longhouse'

'I loved the conceptual idea and tone of this story, both tragic and comedic, which is slightly George Saunders like, but also has its own original and manifested brilliance. The juxtaposition of modernity and a faux historical replica village is so well done, but alongside the clashing settings, the story explores in a serious way how we might hide in the past and from the past. There’s a much bigger hinterland surrounding the episode/day, which is very satisfying. The characters are so sympathetically drawn. Tension builds in the story and by the end the reader has a real sense of a contained but very expansive drama.'
